David G. Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, professor of surgery and director of the Southwestern Academic Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA), published his 600th peer-reviewed manuscript in January 2022, at age 52. He becomes the first podiatric surgeon in the history of the specialty to reach this landmark. He reached 500 peer-reviewed manuscripts at age 50. His work has been cited more than 55,000 times. He and his colleagues have become the first podiatric surgeons to publish in a multitude of high impact peer-reviewed journals. This includes the New England Journal of Medicine, Nature journals, The Lancet, JAMA, Journal of Vascular Surgery, and Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery among many others.
