My 8 year old daughter has been doing gymnastics for several years. She is very athletic and competitive but she does it mostly for recreation and to stay active. She also plays soccer and basketball. Needless to say, my wife and I run around quite a bit between practices and games. We believe that an active kid is a healthy kid. With all the issues of childhood obesity, it is even more important to instill in children the importance of staying active and eating healthy.
Watching out for injury is also important. We were at her final class last week where she showed us her routine.
I noticed one of the coaches in the gym wearing a knee brace.
So, of course I have to ask her what happened and she says “all the years of gymnastics and tumbling has hurt my knees and the brace helps relieve the stress and pressure when I land. I have tried so many but I think this one the best.” Knee injuries are definitely something for us to keep on eye on as the years progress. Right now, my daughter is young and having fun and that’s what it is all about!
