Pistorius’s next court date set for June

Oscar Pistorius, the 26-year-old South African double amputee and Olympic and Paralympic sprinter, is free on bail and awaiting his next court hearing on June 4 on a charge of premeditated murder. Pistorius maintains that the fatal February 14 shooting of his 29-year-old girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, was accidental.

At the 2011 World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea, Pistorius became the first amputee to win an able-bodied world track medal. And at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, he became the first double-leg amputee to compete in the Olympics when he entered the men’s 400 m and 4 × 400 m relay.

At the 2012 Summer Paralympics, Pistorius won gold medals in the men’s 400 m and 4 × 100 m relay, setting world records in both events. He also won a silver medal in the 200 m, having set a world record in the semifinal.
