OHI expands position in DME solutions with December acquisition of SafeStep

Ronkonkoma, NY-based Orthotic Holdings Inc. (OHI), a global supplier of lower extremity orthotic devices and durable medical equipment (DME), announced in December the addition of Milford, CT-based SafeStep to its collection of brands, which also includes Langer Biomechanics, Arizona AFO, and The Orthotic Group.

Josh White, DPM, CPed, and Richard Krouch founded SafeStep in 2000 to sell diabetic shoes, custom ankle foot orthoses, and other DME to the podiatry market. The company now supplies 3000 medical practices, offering 500-plus shoe styles from eight manufacturers, according to OHI.

SafeStep also offers a comprehensive DME treatment protocol, Worry Free DME, that ensures Medicare compliance while streamlining billing and procurement.

“The acquisition of SafeStep is consistent with OHI’s vision of creating a complete continuum of care for our healthcare partners,” said OHI President and COO, Jason Kraus.

“It perfectly illustrates OHI’s 2014 strategy of aggressive, multifaceted growth aimed at expanding our leadership position in DME solutions for healthcare providers. The SafeStep brand and its founder, Dr. White, are welcome additions to the OHI family and all of our customers will experience the immediate benefit of our expanded capabilities,” he said.

White, a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association’s DME subcommittee and an expert panelist for Codingline, an online provider of reimbursement and practice management services, has an ongoing senior role within OHI.

“OHI’s scale and substantial resources will enable SafeStep to leverage our unique features on a global basis, allowing us to bring benefits to a greater number of foot care providers and their patients,” White said.
