Foot Science prefab FO reduces injury risk

Contoured prefabricated foot orthoses from Christchurch, New Zealand-based Foot Science International may help reduce the risk of lower extremity injury in naval recruits undergoing basic training, according to research epublished in October by the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Investigators from La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, randomized 306 recruits training at the Royal Australian Navy Recruit School to wear contoured Formthotics insoles or flat sham insoles during 11 weeks of training. The combined incidence of medial tibial stress syndrome, patellofemoral pain, Achilles tendinopathy, and plantar heel pain during training was 34% lower in the group who wore the contoured insoles.
