Ellipse updates limb-lengthening system

The US Food and Drug Administration gave Irvine, CA-based Ellipse Technologies clearance in February to market the latest generation of its adjustable intramedullary nail system for limb lengthening of the femur or tibia.

The Precice 2 Intramedullary Limb Lengthening System has a nonmodular intramedullary design to simplify implantation and provide increased nail length and distraction range options, the company reported. The system also includes a smaller 8.5-mm nail that will work for patients whose anatomy is too small for the original, larger Precice nail.

Surgeons can use the system to correct limb inequality caused by congenital shortening, post-traumatic fractures, and other conditions that result in leg shortening.
