Evanston, IL-based DM Systems made a series of environmental efforts in 2011, including upgrading its lighting to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and implementing a bicycle-friendly commuter policy for employees, according to its first environmental sustainability report, released last month.
DM, which makes the Heelift Suspension Boot and HeelSafe DVT Hosiery, worked with corporate sustainability consultants Go2Green to focus on energy efficiency, transportation impacts, waste reduction, and employee engagement.
The lighting upgrades reduced carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated five tons and other simple changes to printing practices saved cartridges and money, the company noted.
The office improvements for commuting cyclists earned DM a bicycle-friendly business designation from the League of American Bicyclists. Next steps for the company include biodegradable packaging to save the company’s hospital clients the cost of waste disposal.
