Awards for young O&P researchers will debut at AOPA national assembly

The American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association was scheduled to announce the inaugural winners of two new awards recognizing outstanding O&P research at its 2011 National Assembly on September 19-22 in Las Vegas. Undergraduate and graduate students in O&P programs and residents at qualified patient care facilities submitted abstracts, which were evaluated by an independent committee that chose one winner each from the orthotic and prosthetic categories.

Troy, MI-based Becker Orthopedic contributed the endowment for the establishment of the Lucille Becker Award and Mt. Sterling, OH-based prosthetic manufacturer WillowWood funded the Kathryn Arbogast Award.

“AOPA is honored that Becker Orthopedic and WillowWood have selected the National Assembly as a forum in which the legacies of two iconic families in the O&P community will be remembered and celebrated through acknowledgement of new and emerging  research talent in our profession,” said AOPA President Tom DiBello, CO, FAAOP.

Both awards will be regular features at the annual AOPA assemblies.
