A multicenter randomized controlled noninferiority trial published in October in The International Journal of Clinical Practice found a topical homeopathic gel and ointment made by Albuquerque, NM-based Heel Inc are as effective as the current standard of care for reducing pain and improving function in patients with acute ankle sprains.
Investigators recruited 449 physically active adults (aged 18-40 years) presenting at 15 outpatient clinics in Spain with unilateral ankle sprain of the lateral ligaments within the past 24 hours. The researchers randomized patients to receive Traumeel gel or ointment or 1% diclofenac gel.
After seven days of treatment, patients in all three groups experienced significant and equivalent pain reduction and functional improvements. The therapies were equally well tolerated.
