ABC names new officers, launches interactive state licensure map

The Board of Directors for the Alexandria, VA-based American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics (ABC) named Donald D. Virostek, CPO, president of the organization on December 1.

Virostek, director of orthotics at the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, began his work with ABC as a volunteer prosthetic examiner. The organization’s sources said he has been instrumental in writing and developing practitioner credentialing exams over the past 12 years. Since joining ABC’s Board of Directors in 2003, he has played a role in creating many of the organization’s current policies.

As part of ABC’s annual leadership transition, Virostek took over from John M. Kenney, CPO, of Lexington, KY. Kenney continues to serve as immediate past president of the board.

In other December business, ABC added three new members to its Board of Directors following the retirement of two members. New members are Christopher J. Fairman, CPO, of Ann Arbor, MI, Deborah Merritt Plescia, CPO, who practices in Covington, LA, and Anthony Sertick Jr., ABC’s new public member and an attorney in Youngstown, OH. Retiring members were Thomas F. Coakley, a public member from Canton, NY, and Robert S. Lin, CPO, of Hartford, CT.

ABC has also has introduced an interactive licensure map for O&P professionals working in licensure states. The ABC’s map is easily accessed from its home page (www.abcop.org.) and includes detailed information on licensure requirements for the 13 states currently requiring individuals to obtain a practice license. It also includes information for Mississippi, which requires certification for orthotists and prosthetists but does not have state licensure.
