Book helps patients prevent amputation

The advice and interventions that have helped decrease amputation rates by 40% in Nashville veterans are now detailed in a book targeted at patients with diabetes and the practitioners who treat them.

“Keep the Legs You Stand On,” written by podiatrist Mark Hinkes, DPM, can be purchased  at amazon.com for $20.65. The 540-page paperback includes check lists, personal health care tips, patient stories, historical background, photos and a list of websites and other resources.

Hinkes is chief of podiatry and director of podiatric medical education at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center/Tennessee Valley Healthcare System in Nashville, and chairman of the Preservation Amputation Care and Treatment (PACT) program.
